Pregnant Diaries: Preparing for Poop

Ok, so as you know, a baby creates SO much waste its first year of life. Eat, poop, sleep. eat, poop, sleep. Repeat. I am a big believer in doing my part to not kill the environment and...basically, I'm cheap. And I hear cloth diapering is cheaper than disposables and I am just fine going cheap. And if I help the environment at the same time, awesome! :)

So, I am now preparing for poop. I hope to go cloth most of the time, knowing that disposables will be needed from time to time (long trips, staying at grandpa's house, if he's watched by a non-mom who's weirded out by cloth...you know, those things). I don't plan to use a diaper service, especially when Jack is young and I am home sitting on my butt for 6 weeks (recuperating). I figure...I am really close to the laundry room-I can do my own laundry (Nini...I hope you are not grossed out by this. I will be rinsing them before I wash. And I will be washing them on hot...err...i think).

So, here's the question-are there any cloth diapering moms out there? If so, which brands and products do you use? Which brands have you liked as a newborn, infant, toddler, etc. I am just trying to...prepare. At least now while I have a couple of bucks to spend :).

Ha! Not grossed out at all! You will be burning through quarters! A few of my friends do cloth diapers. I will see what I can find out for you! Can't wait to meet this kid!

my parents used cloth diapers for me. my grandma made some at first, but then they switched to a service after a while.

i like the idea of a service better, because they wash and sanitize for you, using mostly heat, the sort you can't get at home.

A wash through the hot cycle and a half-cup of vinegar leaves the cloth diapers sparkling and fresh. The vinegar is a natural disinfectant and fabric softener for Jack's delicate tushy.

As for the diapering process, SUUUUUUPER easy. Use Snappi diaper clips and you are golden. There are simple hoses that allow you to directly clean the poop into the toilet. The poop should be pretty non-offensive as long as you are not clogging JackJack with formula or over-preserved-baby-"food"...

I can show you a basic fold that keeps blowouts to a minimum with a scarf on Sunday... ;o)

I never got used to the poop and all that comes with it. But I did make it through and glad that is over.

I heard that Steve R. was so afraid of the baby poop that he filled a bathtub and changed a baby diaper while in the tub. I never tried that one.

One day however, in our old age we will be the ones wearing diapers and our children changing us. So it goes full circle in the circle of life as Elton sings.

you know, i like the diaper service idea, but from what I hear, it's just as bad for the environment as disposables. But...Tiny Tots is about the same amount of moola as the disposables. I like the idea of other people cleaning up poop for me, but don't think I can afford to hire someone to do it at this time.

oh boy...adults in diapers. That was a reality we were thinking we'd have to experience if mike's grandma needed in home care and couldn't afford it. I'm not ready for it. I know it will all happen some day. But I'm not ready. I will focus on baby poop for now.

Don't do it! Poop is bad! It smells like poop too! And it gooossh out all over you. If I could have done it over I would not feed them at all. Then no poop! The bathtub method worked well until Caren got home and almost killed for the mess she had to clean. :) I'm a bad mommy!

Brad and I did Tiny Tots with Gracie for the first year and a half or so. After that she got too wriggly to hold down whilst getting the Snappi and diaper cover on her. I thought it was great. The hidden costs are the diaper covers, you should have at least three. If you go to the TIny Tots website they have a community board where people sell they're 'gently used' diaper covers, as long as you don't mind that. But keep in mind that breast milk poop is waaaay less stinky than solid food poop, so if you are planning on breastfeeding you have a while before you have to smell the real deal....

Colleen, what brand of covers did you use? Did you like them? I think we will be able to go with Tiny Tots for at least a few months, which I am excited about (gifts from family).

I do plan to cloth diaper long term, so buying a few covers would be a good investment, and I am thinking about buying a couple of All in Ones for when Mike doesn't want to change him at 3am and have to figure out Snappi's. i hear nothing but great things about the Bum Genius all in one, one sizer's. I think I am going to get a couple of them. And using prefolds and covers 70% of the time. See...I have been overly obsessed with poop the last week.

Oh yes. I almost forgot. We ended up using disposables at night, because we figured out that it kept Gracie asleep for an hour or so longer. (Was it that long? Heck, back then we would have settled for an extra 20 minutes!!) Anyway, I don't know what brand we used. (I'm going to have to figure that out myself!) I think we kept it 'cheap & cheerful' as the Brits say, white, since they were getting the life bleached out of them anyway every few days. The Tiny Tots newsletter and website gave us the most info. I remembered later that another reason we stopped the cloth diapers is b/c Brad's mom would always offer to pick up a box of diapers for us at Costco, I think she thought the coth thing was weird, so she never offered to help with the service. (Not that we expected her to.) But huge free boxes of diapers at regular intervals became too hard to resist!!
